Namaste, sometimes pronounced as namaskar or namaskaram, is a common greeting in Hindu culture. It can now be encountered in the Indian subcontinent or in Southeast Asia in areas where Hindu religions are found. It is used for both greeting and parting. The namaste greeting is usually said with a slight bow and with the palms pressed together. The fingers point upwards and the thumbs towards the chest. Such a gesture is called Añjali Mudrā [anjali mudra].
Namaste literally translates as "I bow down to you". The salutation can be uttered without making the gesture or the gesture can be made without uttering the salutation.
